Stout Bill Would name Bridge After Former Gov. Tener

HARRISBURG, June 22, 2010 - - State Sen. J. Barry Stout today announced that the Senate unanimously approved his bill designating the bridge carrying State Route 2018 over the Monongahela River after former Pennsylvania Governor John K. Tener.

Tener, a former Charleroi resident, was governor from 1911 to 1915. He earned a reputation as a highway czar for signing the “Sproul Road Bill” into law. This bill gave the state responsibility of 9,000 public roads that counties and cities had previously maintained.

“It is an honor to have an opportunity to name this bridge after a transportation trailblazer like former Governor Tener,” Stout said. “As Governor, he enacted laws that are still on the books today that put Pennsylvania at the front of transportation development nationwide.”

The “Governor John K. Tener Memorial Bridge” would carry State Route 2018 over the Monongahela River from North Charleroi to Monessen.

In addition to serving as Governor, Tener played major league baseball with the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Burghers, and the Chicago White Stockings and served as president of the National League.

Following the Senate vote, Stout’s bill, Senate Bill 1288, is now under consideration in the House of Representatives.
