Stout, Solobay, White Announce Local Grants

HARRISBURG, November 13, 2009 - - State Sen. J. Barry Stout and state Reps. Tim Solobay and Jesse White today announced nearly $11,000 in state grants for three local automotive service providers under the Nitrogen Tire Inflation System Grant program.

John Sisson Motors, Inc. and Jaks Muffler & Brake from the city of Washington will receive grants for $3,959 and $3,250, respectively. Corwin Jeep Sales & Service from Hickory will receive a grant totaling $3,717.

“Both of these businesses from the city of Washington are taking extra steps to improve fuel economy and these grants are a reward for their energy consciousness,” Stout said. “Not only does this nitrogen system improve our environment, but it can also help consumers by improving safety and extending tire wear over time.”

“When tires lose pressure, they force the engine to run harder and burn more fuel, and they are less safe,” Solobay added. “Since nitrogen-inflated tires maintain their pressure four times longer, the tires these businesses sell and service will save their customers money and make driving their vehicles safer.”

The Nitrogen Tire Inflation System Grant program provides Pennsylvania automotive service providers who sell tires in the Commonwealth with 50 percent matching reimbursement grants of up to $5,000 to purchase and install a nitrogen tire inflation system.

“Fuel economy is directly attributed to high gas prices and oil consumption. Implementing nitrogen inflation is one of many ways we can increase energy efficiency while reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” White said. “I am pleased area businesses recognize their role in this process, and are taking steps to help the environment and save money for consumers.”
