Greene County Sewer Plans Receive State Funding

HARRISBURG, May 20, 2009 – State Sen. J. Barry Stout and Rep. Bill DeWeese announced today that state grants totaling more than $7,100 will help Greene County with sewage projects.

“The cost of replacing aging infrastructure can be too much for some communities to handle,” said Stout (D-Greene/Allegheny/ Beaver/Washington/Westmoreland). “Funding from the state helps keep our infrastructure up-to-date, local taxes stable and our communities safe and healthy.”

Stout said the following townships have received grants to be used towards eligible expenses for sewage enforcement provisions.

  • $2,294.35 for Perry Township;
  • $2,278.57 for Jefferson Township;
  • $1,895.23 for Cumberland Township;
  • $652 for Washington Township

“This funding demonstrates the Commonwealth’s commitment toward helping local officials keep sewage rates at a reasonable level, while at the same time improving the systems to reflect long-range needs,” said DeWeese (D-Greene/Fayette/Washington).

Act 537, the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act, was enacted to correct existing sewage disposal problems and prevent future problems. To meet these objectives, the Act requires proper planning of all types of sewage facilities. The grants are administered through the state Department of Environmental Protection.
