Stout & DeWeese Announce Growing Greener Grant
HARRISBURG, February 20, 2009 – State Sen. J. Barry Stout and Rep. Bill DeWeese announced today that Greene County will receive a $97,721 state grant to help protect the area around Whiteley Creek.
“Stream bank erosion has become a serious threat to our land, water, plant and animal resources,” Stout said. “This grant will help ensure that the water in Whiteley Creek is of a good quality, the fish in the creek survive and the risk of flooding is lessened.”
The grant will go to Greene County Conservation District to stabilize the stream bank along Whiteley Creek. According to the Greene County Conservation District website, the group’s mission is “to promote the awareness of conservation practices and their effects.”
“Leaving eroding stream banks untreated can cause loss or damage to buildings, roads, wildlife habitat, farmland and other property,” DeWeese said. “This grant provides an important step toward improving our local water, protecting our property and our ecosystem.”
The state’s Department of Environmental Protection administers the grants under Pennsylvania’s Growing Greener program. Grants are awarded to clean up rivers, streams and watershed resources across the Commonwealth.
