Stout, Solobay Announce Local Recycling Grants

HARRISBURG, December 3, 2009 - - State Sen. J. Barry Stout and state Rep. Tim Solobay today announced a $7,322 recycling performance state grant for Canonsburg Borough.

The grant is under the Recycling Performance Grant Program and is based on the 728.4 tons recycled for calendar year 2007 and the municipality’s population.

“Recycling is one of the most proven and successful ways to preserve our environment for future generations,” Stout said. “Canonsburg Borough runs an extremely successful recycling program and this state grant is well-deserved.”

The Recycling Performance Grant Program provides incentive to help Pennsylvania communities increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling and promote economic growth in the Commonwealth through job creation and market expansion. This grant is in addition to the funds that the Department of Environmental Protection allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling program.

"Recycling not only helps to improve our environment, but it also helps to spur the state's economy," Solobay said.

Pennsylvania's recycling industry includes more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses, generates $18.4 billion in gross annual sales and employs more than 81,000 people."
