Washington County Sewer Plans Receive State Funding

HARRISBURG, April 27, 2009 –State Sen. J. Barry Stout and Rep. Tim Solobay announced today that a state grant of more than $102,000 will help Washington County with a sewage project.

“Repairing aging sewer systems can be very expensive to homeowners,” Stout (D-Washington) said. “State funding is so important so we are able to keep costs low as well as health concerns.”

Stout said North Strabane Township in Washington County will receive a grant of $102,521.32 to be used for reimbursement of half of the costs of preparing the official sewage plan and revisions to official plans as required under Act 537.

"I am pleased we are able to assist homeowners with this very important task of repairing aging sewer systems,” Solobay (D-Washington) said. “Properly maintained municipal sewer systems are key to keeping our water systems safe."

Act 537, the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act, was enacted to correct existing sewage disposal problems and prevent future problems. To meet these objectives, the Act requires proper planning of all types of sewage facilities. The grants are administered through the state Department of Environmental Protection.
