Stout & Solobay Announce Grants for Washington County Recycling

HARRISBURG, April 1, 2009 – State Sen. J. Barry Stout and Rep. Tim Solobay announced today that two state grants were awarded in Washington County to further recycling efforts.

“Recycling is a key component in protecting our environment, reducing energy usage and boosting our economy,” Stout (D-Washington) said. “East Washington Borough and Monongahela have demonstrated a real commitment to recycling and the funds will help maintain and expand those efforts.”

A grant of $1,500 was awarded to East Washington Borough based on the 118.4 tons they recycled in 2007 and the borough’s population. The city of Monongahela will receive $314 based on the 31.4 tons they recycled in 2007, as well as the city’s population. The grants are part of the Recycling Performance Grant Program.

“Recycling should be encouraged in Pennsylvania," Solobay (D-Washington) said. "Not only is it good for our environment, but it is good for our economy creating more than 81,000 jobs and contributing approximately $305 million in state taxes every year”

Act, 101, the Recycling Performance Grant Program provides incentive to help Pennsylvania communities increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling and promote economic growth in the Commonwealth through job creation and market expansion. The grants are administered through the state Department of Environmental Protection.
