HARRISBURG, March 5, 2007 - State Sen. J.
Barry Stout, state Rep. Bill DeWeese, state Rep. Tim Solobay,
and state Rep. Jesse White today announced that $731,900 in
state funding is on its way to southwestern Pennsylvania for
community park improvements.
“Our community parks provide families and friends with the
opportunity to get outside, get active, and get together,” said
Stout (D-Greene/Washington/Allegheny/Beaver/Westmoreland). “They
are a great resource for all Pennsylvanians, but we have to
invest in them to guarantee they are available for generations
to come.”
The following projects will receive funding through the
Community Conservation Partnerships Program:
-
Hanover Township, Beaver County - $48,000 -
construction of dugouts, installation of disabled access,
fencing, bleachers, site grading, landscaping, sign and
other improvements at the Ball Field Complex
-
Greensboro Borough, Greene County - $366,000
- development of a 1.25-mile segment of the Greensboro Trail
from Mon-Vue Park to old Lock House 7
-
Canonsburg Borough, Washington County -
$221,000 - installation of concrete walkways, disabled
access, lighting, utilities, gazebos, landscaping, sign and

Grove Park

$8,900 - preparation of a master site development plan for
Independence Park
-
McDonald Borough, Washington County - $40,000
- construction of a skateboard plaza, installation of
disabled access, site furniture, landscaping, sign and other
improvements at Heritage Park
The Canonsburg project will redevelop a former
industrial site that was once the fabrication center for the
Fort Pitt Bridge Works. The project’s cost is estimated at
nearly $20 million, with a significant portion coming from the
private sector.
“With the new riverfront park, the Fort Pitt site will be a
place to enjoy downtown Canonsburg and all that the waterfront
has to offer,” said Solobay. “On top of this, the warehouse and
office space being built there will attract new businesses,
creating 500 new jobs for the families of Washington County.”
The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
administers the Community Conservation Partnerships Program to
provide financial and technical assistance to local governments
and organizations for the planning, acquisition, and development
of park, recreation, conservation, and greenways projects.
Funding sources include the Keystone Recreation, Park and
Conservation Fund and the Growing Greener Bond Fund (Growing
Greener 2).
