MATHER COAL REFUSE PILE CLEANUP GETS STATE BOOST

HARRISBURG, April 18, 2007
- State Sen. J. Barry Stout, state Rep. Bill DeWeese, the Greene County Board of Commissioners and the Greene County Industrial Development Authority Board announced today that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has awarded a $250,000 grant to the Greene County Industrial Development Authority for additional remedial work at the Mather coal refuse pile site.

“This grant is essential for the authority to complete their work and to avoid wasting the millions of dollars that have already been spent on the Mather gob pile cleanup,” said Stout (D-Greene/Washington/Allegheny/Beaver/Westmoreland). “I am glad the state stepped up to the plate and delivered the funds to protect this investment in our environment and our economic development.”

“It is a pleasure to collaborate with Senator Stout in acquiring this most recent funding for the Mather project. Today’s announcement follows several million dollars in other DEP assistance that we already have obtained for this environmental cleanup and we are working on additional state grants as well,” said DeWeese (D-Greene/Fayette/Washington).

The state grant will finance remediation of water infiltration and runoff from the site and restoration of 2,400 feet of stream bank along the South Fork of Ten Mile Creek. The project will stabilize the site and protect the integrity of neighboring properties.
