HISTORIC HICKORY TO GET FACELIFT, THANKS TO STATE GRANT

HARRISBURG, DEC. 20, 2006 - State Sen. J. Barry Stout today announced that the state Department of Community and Economic Development has approved a $60,000 grant for Mt. Pleasant Township through the New Communities/Main Street Program.

“All across Pennsylvania, local communities are utilizing this program, which stimulates economic development by focusing on historic downtowns,” said Stout (D-Washington/Greene). “This state grant will help historic Hickory improve and revitalize its streets and sidewalks.”

The township will use the grant to fund the design and engineering phase of Hickory’s streetscape project, which will upgrade the historic downtown to increase safety. The multi-phased initiative focuses on the removal and replacement of sidewalks, curbing, trees, and lampposts.

The New Communities/Main Street Program provides grants to municipalities to help a community’s downtown economic development effort.
