EIGHTY FOUR, January 23, 2006 - The state Department of Revenue
will make applications available for the
Property Tax/Rent Rebate program by the end of February,
according to state Sen. J. Barry Stout.
“Many concerned constituents have reached out to my office about
this important program,” said Stout (D-Washington/Greene). “We have
been informed that the Property Tax and Rent Rebate applications
will not be mailed until February. Many state legislators, including
myself, are looking at expanding the program as part of the property
tax debate, which may partially explain the delay.”
Low-income seniors and permanently disabled Pennsylvania residents
can apply for up to $500 as a property tax or rent rebate. To
qualify for the program, claimants must be one of the following:
*65 years of age or older,
*50 years of age or older and widowed, or
*18 years of age or older and permanently disabled.
Annual household income must not exceed $15,000, but only 50 percent
of Social Security and Railroad Retirement benefits count towards
that calculation. Black lung benefits are completely excluded.
For tax year 2003, over $125 million was distributed through the
program. The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program is funded through the
Pennsylvania Lottery.
Individuals may call Stout’s district office at 724-225-5400 to
receive the Property Tax/Rent Rebate application (PA-1000). The
application deadline is June 30, and rebate checks will be mailed
beginning July 1.
