RACCOON TOWNSHIP EARNS STATE RECYCLING GRANT

HARRISBURG, August 30, 2006 -
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has rewarded Raccoon Township in Beaver County with a grant of $193 through the Recycling Performance Grant Program, according to state Sen. J. Barry Stout.

“Recycling is a way we can preserve Pennsylvania’s environment for future generations,” said Stout (D-Allegheny/Beaver/Greene/Washington/Westmoreland). “This grant program encourages Pennsylvania’s communities to recycle and provides municipalities with additional state funding. In these tight budget times, every dollar counts.”

The department bases the grant amount on total tons recycled and the municipality’s overall recycling rate. For the calendar year 2004, the township recycled 31.4 tons of refuse.

With Act 101 of 1988, the General Assembly instituted a $2-per-ton fee on garbage to finance recycling grants. In addition to the performance grants, the department provides grants for municipalities looking to establish and expand their recycling programs.

Recycling provides substantial environmental and economic benefits to Pennsylvania. According to DEP, for every public dollar invested, recycling generates $5 in direct economic impact.
