HARRISBURG, March 14, 2005 -
Through the efforts of state Sen. J. Barry Stout, along with
Reps. Peter Daley, David Levdansky, and Vincent Biancucci,
$3,401 in Recycling Performance Grants will be distributed
to communities in southwestern Pennsylvania.
“Rather than dictating to local governments how much they
should recycle, the state provides an economic incentive
with the Recycling Performance Grants program,” said Stout
(D-Beaver/Greene/Washington). “Municipalities appreciate the
extra funds, and the state fulfills its mission of
increasing recycling participation.”
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will
allocate the grants to the following municipalities:
· Carroll Township, Washington County - $3,053
· Greene Township, Beaver County - $348.
The department based the grant amounts on total tons
recycled and the municipality’s overall recycling rate in
2003. DEP administers the program under Section 904 of Act
101, the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste
Reduction Act. Through a $2-per-ton fee on garbage, the
department funds the Recycling Performance Grants and grants
for municipalities looking to establish and maintain
recycling programs.
