HARRISBURG, July 5,
2005
– A plan to sell
the former state correctional institution in Waynesburg has been
signed by
Gov. Rendell, according to state Sen. J. Barry Stout and
Rep. H. William DeWeese."
This
has been the top priority for the SCI-Waynesburg Re-Use Task Force,
which has worked diligently to identify an alternate use for this
facility,” said Stout (D-Washington/Greene/Beaver/
Westmoreland/Allegheny). “Soon, the property will be generating tax
revenues, creating jobs, and providing a valuable service to our
community.”
Senate
Bill 697, which was sponsored by Stout, conveys the 117-acre site to the Basalt
Trap Rock Co. for $990,000.
"Senator Stout and I convened the Re-Use Task Force in 2003 to
ensure that the facility would be used again," said DeWeese. "We
had considerable input from the community, and it is gratifying to
know that all of the parties involved in the meetings were dedicated
to this cause."
Basalt
plans to operate a private school for at-risk youth. The $3.5
million project is expected to create 50 to 140 jobs.
