HARRISBURG, February 18, 2005 -
State Sen. J. Barry Stout and Rep. Timothy Solobay announced
today over $3 million in state funding to repair local
railroads damaged by last fall’s flooding.
“Southwest Pennsylvania is still recovering from Hurricane
Ivan, and I’m pleased to provide this money to help with the
recovery,” said Stout (D-Washington/Greene). “Our state’s
rail infrastructure is vital to our economic
competitiveness.”
The following rail projects will be receiving state funding:
· Pittsburgh & Ohio Central Railroad, Inc. - $2.1 million
· Allegheny Valley Railroad Co. - $687,689
· Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. - $266,770
"A vibrant freight rail system is critical not only to our
transportation network, but to the region's economy," said
Solobay (D-Washington). “Every train car on the track means
one or two fewer trucks on the road. These grants will help
keep these railroads on track for the future."
The funds are part of last year’s Highway and Transportation
Capital Budget (Act 149 of 2004), legislation sponsored by
Stout. Yesterday, the state Office of the Budget released
$10.5 million of transportation assistance funds for 13 rail
projects statewide.
