HARRISBURG, Feb. 15-
State Sen. J. Barry Stout today reminded homeowners that
time is running out to sign up for their share of $1 billion
in statewide tax relief.
“March 1 is the deadline for submitting your homestead
exclusion application and receiving a property tax cut,”
Stout said. “For example, a homeowner in Central Greene
School District can expect a property tax cut of $434.”
Last year, Stout helped lead the fight to provide for the
historic property tax cuts and empower local leaders to
modernize their mechanism for funding public schools.
Stout said the law taps Pennsylvania’s share of slots
proceeds to generate an estimated $1 billion for property
taxes statewide. The new gaming law will also generate
billions in economic development funding and provide
volunteer fire departments and emergency medical services
with dependable annual funding from the state.
The Greene County lawmaker added that the measure protects
citizens from huge school tax hikes by requiring voter
approval on excessive school construction or spending
projects.
“There have been many myths and rumors circulating about
property tax relief, as if it’s too good to be true,” Stout
said. “It is true, and there is no catch - no hidden fees
and no reassessments.”
At last report, over 60 percent of the state’s eligible
homeowners had already signed up for the tax cut, Stout
noted.
“Neglecting to submit your homestead exclusion application
by March 1 would be just as bad as throwing money away,”
Stout said.
